Our residents are counting on you. Give today to provide the comfort, dignity, and end-of-life care they deserve in their final days.
You Don’t Need Any Special Skills to Make a Difference Here. You Just Need to Be Who You Are.
“I wanted something with a bit more meaning in my life.”
That desire is what brought Bill to Morning Light more than six months ago. Since then, he has become a familiar and welcome presence in our home, spending time with residents, sharing conversations, listening, and sometimes simply sitting alongside someone who needs a little company.
As a clinical psychologist, Bill has spent much of his life listening to and connecting with people. But when he talks about volunteering at Morning Light, he doesn’t focus on professional skills or expertise.
“I just talk to people,” he says. It sounds simple. But at Morning Light, where we provide a free home and compassionate care for individuals on hospice who have nowhere else to turn, simply being there can mean more than we sometimes realize.
For Bill, that experience has become meaningful in both directions.
“The opportunity to be sitting with people and being able to be fully present is a blessing,” he says. “It’s so enriching.”
There can be a misconception that volunteering in a home for people approaching the end of life must always be difficult or sad. There are, of course, hard days. But there is also laughter. Friendship. Stories. Music. Quiet conversations. And the simple privilege of one person giving another their undivided attention.
For Bill, Morning Light has come to feel like “a sacred place.”
Perhaps that is part of what makes volunteering here so special. You don’t have to arrive with all the answers. You don’t have to know exactly what to say. You don’t need a particular set of skills to sit beside someone, listen to their story, share a laugh, or remind them through your presence that they are seen and valued.
Bill’s invitation to anyone considering volunteering is simple:
“Spend some time here at Morning Light just being who you are.”

Our volunteers help ensure that our residents are surrounded by people who care during one of the most vulnerable and important chapters of their lives. But, as Bill has discovered, the experience can give something back too: perspective, connection, gratitude, and perhaps even some of the meaning we are all searching for.
Thank you, Bill, for sharing your time, your presence, and yourself with our residents over the past six months.
If you have ever wondered whether you have something to offer at Morning Light, perhaps the answer is simpler than you think.
Come as you are. Sit for a while. Listen to a story.
Sometimes, being there is enough. Interested in volunteering at Morning Light?
